Facebook Ads vs Google Ads for Home Service: Which to Run First?

By Tyler Sharp/July 22, 2026/5 min read

It is the question every home service owner asks before spending a dollar on ads: Facebook or Google? The short answer is that they do two different jobs, and picking the wrong one first is how budgets get wasted. Here is how to think about it.

Google captures demand. Facebook creates it.

When someone types "water heater repair near me" into Google, they have a problem right now and are ready to pay. That is captured demand, and it is the warmest lead in marketing. Facebook and Instagram work differently: you interrupt people scrolling who were not looking for you, and you plant the idea. That is created demand.

Rule of thumb: if you need booked jobs this week, start with Google. If you want to fill the pipeline for next month and stay top of mind, add Facebook.

When Google Search wins

For most established home service businesses, Google Search is where to start. The intent is higher, the path to a booked job is shorter, and you can aim tightly at your service area and best-margin work. If your phone needs to ring sooner rather than later, this is your platform. We cover how to size that budget in our post on Google Ads budgets.

When Facebook and Instagram win

Meta shines for demand you have to create: seasonal offers, a new service line, remodels and upgrades people were not actively searching for, and staying visible in your community. It is also unbeatable for retargeting, quietly following up with people who visited your site but did not call.

Why most established operators run both

Once Google is producing booked jobs profitably, adding Meta compounds the effect. Google catches the people ready today. Facebook keeps you in front of everyone else until they are ready, then retargeting closes the gap. Run together, each makes the other work harder.

The real deciding factor

Whichever you choose, the platform is only half the battle. The fastest way to waste either budget is slow follow-up on the leads they produce. Wire your ads into instant lead follow-up first, then let them run. A managed setup keeps both platforms pointed at the same goal: booked jobs, not clicks.
